The Institute for Youth Development KULT, in cooperation with the City of Srebrenik, completed a survey on the position and needs of young people in preparation for developing a youth strategy for the City of Srebrenik.
The analysis of the position and needs of young people, along with the youth strategy currently being drafted, is a testament to the City’s care and commitment to improving the lives of its young people.
The Analysis of the position and needs of the youth in Srebrenik is based on a survey conducted on 379 people aged 15 to 30 from Srebrenik. The Analysis provides insight into young people’s needs and problems in education, work, employment, health and social protection, culture, sports, and security.
Information from the Analysis is the basis for the development of youth strategy. Some interesting data points include:
- The city of Srebrenik follows the trend of the Tuzla Canton, recording a decline in the number of elementary school students. In the 2018/2019 academic year, there were 3,755 students enrolled in elementary schools in Srebrenik. By the 2021/2022 academic year, this number had decreased to 3,527 (a decline of 228 students).
In the same period, the number of students in secondary education decreased by around 9%.
- The analysis reveals that 35.6% of young people in Srebrenik believe there is a shortage of practical classes in their education. The survey responses revealed that approximately 24% of young people had no practical classes or work placements during their education.
- When asked about their opinions on the best jobs, half of our young respondents said that owning a business is the way to go. 48% of young people said that they would like to start their own business but are unable to.
- Seven out of eight young people from Srebrenik who are in education do not have a scholarship. The proportion of young people who receive a scholarship is 8.4%. Most receive scholarships from the city (2.6%) and Canton (2.1%).
- Around 47% of young people do not remember their last physical exam or have never had one. Common reasons that young people undergo physical exams include getting a driver’s license for the purpose of employment, sports, or when referred by a doctor (due to health issues). Only 11.5% of young people had a physical on their own initiative.
- Only 12.9% play sports every day.
- In Srebrenik, most young people feel they have little to no influence on local decision-making. About two-thirds (approximately 36%) have a negative perception of their impact on decisions made at the local level.
- More than half of young people believe that working in non-governmental organizations or associations is an effective or very effective way of creating social change.
- Most young people in Srebrenik get their information from online portals, with 52.2% reporting that they read these portals daily. Social media, particularly Instagram and Facebook, are also popular sources of information.
