Orange Day Tonight at Sarajevo National Theater Premiere of “Croatian Rhapsody” by Krleža

Every 25th of the month is commemorated as Orange Day – the day of fighting violence over women and girls. The Institute for Youth Development KULT, with the support of the American Embassy in BiH, will commemorate the 25th of this month at the Sarajevo National Theater, at the premiere of the “Croatian Rhapsody” play by Miroslav Krleža. This play, directed by Gradimir Gojer, essentially focuses on the numerous anomalies in one society. After the play, the activists of the Institute for Youth Development KULT will talk with the attendants, share cupcakes made at the Dream Cookies workshop with messages, and the attendants will be able to see the exhibition of the academic painter Emina Kujundži?.

Every fifth woman in Bosnia and Herzegovina has experienced some form of violence during her lifetime. According to the data of the Agency for Gender Equality, 52.8% of women experienced a form of violence by the age of 15. Besides physical and psychological violence, women in BiH are in an unfavorable position in other fields as well, claims Mirela Ajanovi? from the Institute for Youth Development KULT. “Very few women are in high positions, a low number of them are in politics, they have unequal salaries… These are all indicators that women in BiH society are not equal to men. This is something that has to be discussed” – stated Mirela Ajanovi? from the Institute for Youth Development KULT.

There are 9 safe houses in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as SOS telephone lines that are free and confidential. By commemorating Orange Day we wish to encourage women to voice their problems and to state to the BiH society that there is a problem and that it has to be discussed.

“Previous month, we commemorated the Orange Day in the streets of the city of Sarajevo, and we decided to commemorate this one at the Theater. Basically, we wish to reach all layers of the BiH society. We want to encourage women to look for help. What provides the necessary strength to our initiative is the fact that on the same day and in the same symbolical manner, the anti-violence campaign is implemented all over the world, thanks to the Global UNiTE youth network, of which the Institute is the member. The Institute for Youth Development KULT will discuss the problem of violence over women and girls on a daily basis. In the following months, the Orange Day will make campaigns similar to this one because no woman should be a victim of violence” – concluded Mirela Ajanovi?.

The Secretary General of UN declared every 25th of the month as Orange Day, as a day of reminding of the importance of preventing, stopping and punishing violence over women and girls.
