BiH Forward: Locally-Owned Sustainable Development

Over one hundred and twenty participants from across Bosnia and Herzegovina are attending the two-day conference BiH Forward: Locally-Owned Sustainable Development, which is taking place in Sarajevo on March 17 and 18, 2022.

Participants have the opportunity to explore and discuss topics such as the importance of organizational self-sustainability, choosing the right time to pursue financial independence and strategies for achieving that goal.

The event organized by Localworks brought together representatives of non-governmental organizations, the public and private sectors, and guests from international agencies and organizations who shared positive examples from practice, knowledge, and experience, as well as the challenges they faced on the way to achieving self-sustainability.

“At a time of division and polarization, Bosnia and Herzegovina needs your creativity and dedication to overcome divisions and create a better future for this beautiful country – a country that is always in my heart,” Samantha Power, USAID administrator, said in a video address at the beginning of the conference.

During the conference, participants will attend three panels on some of the most important topics related to the sustainability of non-governmental organizations:

  • The role of international donors in building local capacities,
  • On the road to organizational sustainability and
  • The role of local units of self-government in the sustainability of civil society organizations.

The conference BiH Forward: Locally-Owned Sustainable Development is organized by the Institute for Youth Development KULT and the Network for Building Peace with the support of USAID in BIH. We want to talk about how we can harness the potential and resources we have in local communities and supercharge local development,” said Šeherzada Halimić, executive director of the Institute.

Snježana Ivandić-Ninković, Localworks program manager at the Network for Building Peace, explained that Localworks activity began a year and a half ago, with the support of USAID BiH. “This is an innovative approach to developing local communities, where civil society organizations play a very important role in actively addressing community needs in collaboration with local authorities and businesses.”

The Localworks initiative supports local organizations in building organizational self-sustainability, all with the aim of solving problems and improving the quality of life in local communities, cities, and the entire country.
