What Do Members of Public Think About the Work of NGOs?

The Institute for Youth Development KULT hosted a two-day conference called “Present and future: Local progress with strong civil society organizations”.

This event aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the civil society in BiH, highlight opportunities for progress, and outline steps towards creating more productive communities in our country.

The work of NGOs generally elicits a wide range of reactions among citizens – from enthusiasm and support to skepticism and criticism. Perceptions of NGOs and their work are shaped by factors such as transparency, efficiency, scope of activities, and the perceived impact these organizations have on society. Insufficient information can sometimes contribute to negative opinions and criticism of non-governmental organizations.

While we were preparing the conference, we decided to talk to members of the public. Then, at the conference, we played two short videos, in which citizens of Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Mostar and Tuzla shared their opinions about the work of NGOs.

Most citizens believe that NGOs play a very important role in society, provide support and protection, and promote positive change in areas that are often neglected. Despite the widespread recognition, appreciation, and value attributed to the work of non-governmental organizations and their contributions to society, some are still skeptical. Increased transparency, involvement of local communities and focus on tangible results could help build citizens’ trust in non-governmental organizations and the work they do.

You can see what members of the public told us about the work of NGOs HERE.

Those who value the importance of non-governmental organizations are happy to give examples of such local organization. The Institute for Youth Development KULT was recognized as a positive example of an NGO dedicated to improving the lives of citizens, driving change, and working towards a better society.
