International Day of Peace

Today is the International Day of Peace, celebrated every September 12. The United Nations declared this day the Day of Peace in 1981, and dedicated it to strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples. The first Day of Peace was celebrated in September of 1982. The theme of this year’s International Day of Peace is “Right Of Peoples to Peace”.

The UN recognized that promoting peace is key for a thorough implementation of human rights, because without peacebuilding human rights are vulnerable to violations around the world. Pursuant to the Youth Law of the Federation of BiH, youth are obligated to “respect and advocate the values of peace and tolerance in communication with all people, not discriminate on any grounds, and act with particular solidarity care towards youth and senior citizens, persons with special needs, national minorities, marginalized groups and individuals, constituent peoples and all others who represent minorities in the local communities they live and work in, and towards other persons in need of solidarity and understanding from their fellow citizens.“ The Law on Youth Organising of Republika Srpska stipulates that “youth organizing in Republika Srpska is based on respecting basic human rights and liberties, as well as original principles of democracy founded on the Constitution of BiH, the Constitution of Republika Srpska and international conventions pertaining to the youth work sector.“ Therefore, both youth-youth related laws stipulate that youth have an obligation to respect those different from them, with the aim of promoting tolerance and peace in the country and the world.

Dear youth, do not forget that peacekeeping is your obligation as well, and peace is your right too. Happy International Day of Peace.
