The first semi-final debate of the Debating Club was held on 17 April 2015 in the Educational-Leisure Centre SPAJALICA on the topic: „This house believes nationalism is a force of good.“ The participants had a challenging task to discuss the world forms of nationalism – its principles, ideas and trends.
In the beginning, the affirmative team distinguished the notion of nationalism from the other movements in history that were devastating for the mankind. The main arguments of the affirmative team were incitement of the development of economy, culture and sports as a result of raising awareness about the concept of nation.
The negative team began its counter-argumenting by emphasizing that the notion of “nazism” is a derivation of “national socialism”. In the further presentation, the negative team members stated that nationalism does not allow people to survive, nor overcome the events from the XIX century. They also pointed to the movements that used nationalism as a background of their development.
The judges unanimously awarded victory to the affirmative team from the Third Gymnasium. The first place was divided between the second affirmative speaker, Aziz Hrelji? and the second negative speaker, Irma Muli?.
