Readiness of Institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina for Open Public Information

In Sarajevo, on Friday, 27 February 2015, a representative of the Institute participated in a round table discussion held on the topic „The readiness of the Institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina for open public information“.

Open public information are those that can be used freely and distributed by anyone. Open public information can be accessed easily and at a low cost, as they are primarily downloaded from the Internet. Also, the information can be reusable and redistributed along with the option to be merged with other information, and all for the cause of impartially informing the citizens about a certain topic of their interest. Open information have the option of universal usage, or, to be used by citizens. Also, certain limitations to public information usage for commercial purposes or using information in a single area only are contradictory to the concept of open public information.

In the round table, the representatives of the NGO sector and the media discussed about the citizens’ awareness of the open public information and the rights they have related to them and about the role of the civil society and the media when it comes to open public information.

Since 24 February 2014, BiH has been a member of the „Open Government Partnership“ and has taken the responsibility to conduct a series of concrete measures to implement the open government principle. One of the first steps is designing a plan of action as a strategic document that will identify the priorities and activities in the area of transparent and responsible work of the government, participation of citizens in the decision-making process and using new technologies and innovations to increase the openness of the government. The document will underline examples of good practice and experiences from countries all over the world. The representatives of the civil society and the media made their suggestions that will help in creating the stated strategic document.

The round table was organised by Transparency International BiH and the Open Knowledge Foundation from the UK.
