Mlada Evropa (eng)

It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it. “ Eleanor Roosevelt

Peace discussions are always a current topic, inasmuch as peace and confidence building amongst people are continuous processes to be worked on, involving all social sectors. Believing in peace and working on peace promotion are values without an alternative.

2014 is marking the 100th anniversary from the outbreak of World War I and the memory of some of the darkest days in human history.

23 June 1914, a month prior to the beginning of WWI, 19 year-old Gavrilo Princip fired two shots in the old part of Sarajevo, murdering Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. Due to the political climate of the period, the consequences of the murder were disastrous. On the 100th anniversary of the event, the City of Sarajevo is organising various cultural, educational and commemorational activities. The key role in the event is played by the Sarajevo Heart of Europe Foundation, an initiative supported by the European Union and several member states.

In this context, the Institute for Youth Development KULT will organize an international youth event entitled “Mlada Evropa” (Young Europe), in close collaboration with the Embassy of Germany in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Between 26 June and 3 July 2014, more than 100 young people from at least 15 European countries and the USA will gather in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The eight-day conference will apply an innovative methodological approach encouraging dialogue and cooperation in order to promote global values of compassion, diversity and reconciliation.

We believe that sharing the past is the key to shaping the future. Therefore, we are moving from Sarajevo to other BiH cities to hold state conferences. The state conferences promoting the values of peace will be held in Mostar, Banja Luka and Tuzla by the end of 2014. Other project activities are also intended to promote peace and reconciliation amongst peoples.

“Peace is its own reward.“ Mahatma Gandhi
