Is Law on Gender Equality Followed in BiH?

A work meeting on following the law and other documents in the area of gender equality and women’s rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina was held on 24 November in the Institute for Youth Development KULT in IlidĹľa.

The work meeting was organised as a part of the project KOŠNICA (BEEHIVE) – a programme of strengthening youth female leaders in youth organisations, that KULT is conducting in collaboration with the Association BH Expert. The aim of the meeting was to acquire information on conducting laws and regulations related to gender equality and rights of women in BiH. The meeting provided the participants an opportunity to present and exchange data on the issue.

The participants of the work meeting were the following representatives of governmental institutions and NGOs: representatives of the Ministry of Justice of BiH, of commissons for gender equality at a municipal and cantonal level, Foundation of Local Democracy, Association Rights for All, Association Women for Women and Association for Culture and Art CRVENA.

Those present were introduced with the activities of the KOĹ NICA project and supported its realisation. Once more it was confirmed that gender equality, despite being legally defined and supported by international documents, is not as implemented in practice as the regulations and requirements demand. A long list of relevant international and local documents in the area of gender and gender policy provides a framework for the gender-equal society to change from concept to reality. In the area of gender equality sigificant improvements were accomplished that should be continued in the future in order to achieve a successful final outcome. The form of stereotypes has changed significantly but it requires a lot of effort, striving and activity of all citizens to erase them completely.
