International Youth Conference in Sarajevo

The Institute for Youth Development KULT is organising the International Youth Conference “Mlada Evropa” in Sarajevo in June and July 2014. It will gather youth activists and young people from Europe and the United States of America.

The year 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I.

On 28 June 1914, one month prior to the outbreak of the war, a 19 year old student Gavrilo Princip fired two gunshots in the old town of Sarajevo, killing the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. Due to the political climate of the time, the consequences of this assassination were catastrophic.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of this event, the city of Sarajevo is organizing a large variety of cultural and educational commemorative activities.  Key stakeholder in this context is the Foundation “Sarajevo Heart of Europe”, an initiative supported by the European Union and several member states.

In this context, the Institute for Youth Development KULT, in close collaboration with the Embassy of Germany in Bosnia and Herzegovina, will organize an international youth event entitled “Mlada Evropa” (Young Europe). Between 26 June and 3 July 2014, more than 100 young people from at least 15 European countries and the USA will gather in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Against the background of Europe’s turbulent past, the eight-day conference will apply an innovative methodological approach encouraging dialogue and cooperation in order to promote the global values of compassion, diversity and reconciliation.

Based on our conviction that sharing the past is the key to shaping the future, “Mlada Evropa” has two constituents: the first four days are dedicated to crucial participation at Sarajevo’s commemorative events. Following that, the participants will explore the possibilities to enhance intercultural awareness, empathy and self-empowerment, thereby contributing to the socio-economic as well as political development of their communities and beyond.

We are looking forward to registration of interested candidates. Please find the registration form as well as other details about the conference on this link
