Seed of Change: Achieving Prosperity in Western Balkans Through Sustainable Agriculture

On June 4, 2014 a presentation was held on a regional study about the ecological transformation of the agricultural sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Croatia. The study was presented by its author, Darko Znaor, PhD, expert in sustainable and ecological agriculture, and Aleksandra Nikoli?, PhD, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences of the University of Sarajevo and Sanela Klari?, MA, president of the GREEN COUNCIL association provided expert analyses of the study from the perspective of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Organic agriculture is an appealing concept in view of the post-war reconstruction of agriculture and rural areas. It goes hand in hand with eco-tourism, environmental protection, thus contributing to creating a more positive image of the region. The EU accession process, the striving towards casting a positive light on the region, an increase in consumer interest, the media, and foreign capital and labour market – indicate that the time is ripe for introducing political measures and strategies conducive to organic agriculture. The focus of the presentation was on the possibilities of switching to organic agriculture in Bosnia and Herzegovina and on potential economic, ecological and social advantages of such a move.

A representative of the Institute for Youth Development KULT was present during the presentation.
