The Institute for Youth Development KULT, with the support of the OSCE Mission in BiH, started implementing the initiative with the purpose of promoting the Law on Prohibition of Discrimination in BiH, during which it will strengthen youth leaders to promote the implementation of the Law on Prohibition of Discrimination in BiH all over Bosnia and Herzegovina as a legal tool and mechanism for building positive social attitudes towards the underrepresented groups.
Even though the Law on Prohibition of Discrimination in BiH was enacted in 2009, it has never been properly promoted. Namely, the results of research conducted by civil society organizations in 2012 only demonstrated that 36% of citizens in BiH are unaware that the Law even exists. 86% of citizens consider discrimination to be one of the main issues, but are uncertain what it actually represents.
The Law on Prohibition of Discrimination represents a significant tool in resolving and preventing discrimination, thus raising awareness of citizens on its existence is especially meaningful. It is extremely important for the citizens to be introduced with the provisions, available options and help they can acquire from the Institution of Human Rights Ombudsman in BiH after filing an appeal related to discrimination and initiating legal processing. The increased awareness will enable the citizens to acquire more knowledge on human and legal rights and help them recognize different forms of discrimination.
In addition to being an educational tool, this law also represents a mechanism the legal interpretation of which, along with consistent implementation, can increase the efficiency of the judicial system in BiH.
