Are Politicians Concealing Their Property?

The Centre for Humane Policy of Doboj and KULT have conducted a research on registered property of party candidates for the national and entity level of government for 2006 and 2010 elections. Results of the research were presented at the public conference held on 21 December at the Media Centre in Sarajevo.

Data regarding the registered property was gathered and transfered form illegible asset cards to readable tables, processed analytically, compared (2006 with 2010) and made accessible to public. The results reveal that the governing structures are becoming richer in comparison with the citizens they are supposed to represent. The untimely registration of property, omitting data, even the basic identification data, neglecting detailed description of property, not following the law regulations in filling out the property statement etc. demonstrate the candidate’s irresponsibility we fear to be an introduction to a much greater irresponsibility that might follow their appointing.

The problem is obviously in the fact that we do not have a supervisory body for evaluating the validity of content in the candidates’ statements concerning their property, because the Agency for Preventing Corruption has not been established yet, despite there being a law about its establishment. An even greater problem is that the Central Elective Committee is not liable for the content of asset cards, which is emphasized in the public during the elections and this encourages the candidates to form their property statements as they find appropriate. We hope that our research will be a contribution in regulating the area and awaken the interest of the public for a more just attitude of the candidates to this legal obligation.
