Youth Workers Build Skills By Learning About Youth Policies

Successful youth policies incorporate various mechanisms that promote youth inclusion in society. During the second training module for expert youth work associates, participants learned how the government, particularly at the local level, addressed youth issues and explored the mechanisms that contribute to effective youth policies in local communities.

One focus of the module was on laws and regulations governing youth policy, aiming to ensure continuous efforts to improve the position and address the needs of young people. These regulations are key tools in policy development.

“I work in prevention and education at the Dignitet Association in Mostar, so the module helps me better understand the context in which young people live and grow. I realized how important it is for young people to be involved in the decision-making process on issues that concern them and how their needs can be addressed in a systematic way. I learned concrete strategies on how to act as an intermediary between young people and decision-makers, using my voice to advocate for changes that will improve the quality of life for young people in our community. The set of values I carry from this module and the entire training will be a part of my daily work. I feel that I will be able to more effectively represent the interests of young people and ensure their voices are heard.”Ella Ljubić, Association Dignitet

The module includes an analysis of existing legal frameworks regulating youth issues, covering the rights and obligations of young people and institutions working with youth. It also presents various mechanisms that local authorities should use to effectively implement youth policies.

“Understanding youth policy mechanisms is crucial for improving support and addressing issues faced by young people in our local communities through youth work. In my work, I try to create a supportive space for young people. This topic will provide additional tools and direct me to resources that can help us in these efforts.– Merima Imamović, Foundation Izvor nade

As part of the module, a “Coffee with…” session was organized, where youth workers Belma Lepir-Cviko, Nina Tirić, and Mersiha Kolčaković shared their experiences in working with young people. Participants had the opportunity to learn in detail about the work of youth workers at both local and cantonal levels, gaining a better understanding of their responsibilities and the challenges they face.

The module equipped participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective advocacy and implementation of youth policies, particularly at the local level. Participants also noted that by understanding and applying the relevant legal frameworks, local communities can significantly improve the position of young people and create better conditions for their development and participation in society.
