Teachers as Community Leaders: Fostering Healthy Lifestyles and Community Spirit

Tina Tomičić, a participant in the “Learn, Think, and Act!” training for teachers and support staff in secondary schools, launched an initiative to promote healthy lifestyles and community spirit in Kreševo. The initiative, “Get Moving and Eat Healthy,” began with a straightforward yet powerful idea: to inspire young people to embrace healthier habits through education, physical activity, and community engagement.

The initiative included numerous workshops and opportunities to socialize. In March, students attended a lecture by a nutritionist on the importance of a healthy diet, followed by a hands-on session where they prepared healthy meals in the kitchen classroom. These activities allowed young people to apply their new knowledge while developing their culinary skills.

During the sports workshops, guided by a professor of physical education and health, young people participated in motor exercises, learned the rules of volleyball, and participated in various sports games. These activities not only promoted physical health but also enhanced community spirit and teamwork among the participants.

Particularly important were the workshops, which included children with developmental disabilities, where participants learned about the benefits of healthy sugars and sweeteners and prepared nutritious desserts. These activities helped participants connect through cooking and the shared enjoyment of the food they prepared.

The culmination of the initiative was a hiking trip to Pogorelica. Despite the rain, the participants enjoyed nature, socializing, and a healthy meal, further reinforcing their healthy habits and sense of community.

The “Get Moving and Eat Healthy” initiative was a valuable experience for all participants. Young people have become more physically active and adopted healthier eating habits, and many have joined the local mountaineering society. Additionally, these activities helped young people develop social skills and experience a sense of community, which had a positive impact on their mental health.

“The ‘Get Moving and Eat Healthy’ initiative offered inspiring and educational experiences. From March through June, children and young people aged 12 to 19 participated in various workshops that promoted healthy nutrition and physical activity. Our guests, children with developmental disabilities, made a special contribution to the project by enriching the workshops with their participation. This initiative not only enhanced young people’s knowledge about healthy lifestyles but also fostered a sense of community and awareness of the importance of inclusion among the participants,” said Tina Tomičić.

This initiative was implemented in partnership with the Association of Young Athletes Kreševo with mentoring and financial support provided by the  Institute for Youth Development KULT.
