Youth Workers Learn About Advocacy Skills and Media Communication

The second training module for youth workers, organized by the Institute for Youth Development KULT, gathered participants from across Bosnia and Herzegovina, aiming to strengthen their skills in public advocacy and effective communication with the public.

Over the course of four days, participants had the chance to explore key tools and strategies for effectively leading advocacy initiatives in youth work, learning through practical exercises, discussions, and case studies. The trainer Aldin Alić outlined methods and steps for planning public advocacy campaigns, highlighting the importance of identifying key issues, mapping stakeholders, and crafting clear messages that can effectively influence decision-making within the community.

Training participant Nerma Omerčević from KUD “Stijena” in Cazin shared her thoughts: “The second training module for youth workers was challenging, yet incredibly valuable. We learned about public advocacy and communication. Although the topics were complex, our trainers effectively simplified them using techniques that helped us better understand how to address challenges in our everyday work with young people. I am grateful for the many examples from their own practice, the great atmosphere, the opportunity to actively participate, and their insistence on having us step outside of our comfort zones, which is where true learning happens.”

The second part of the module focused on communication with the public and was led by trainer Tahir Žustra. The focus was on crafting clear, tailored messages for various target groups, using digital communication channels, and building a positive image for youth initiatives through different techniques. It also emphasized developing skills for effectively engaging with the media. In interactive workshops, participants developed communication strategies and learned how to deliver their messages authentically, ensuring that their target group is engaged.

Mateja Topić from the Association “Experience Rama” highlighted the value of the second module, saying: “By working on topics such as public advocacy and communication in youth work, I gained a wealth of new knowledge and skills. Trainers Aldin and Tahir created such an engaging and friendly atmosphere, which made the training even more productive. In addition to learning, there was also time for socializing and sharing experiences with colleagues from the group, which just added to the entire experience. The entire module was great, both in terms of education and opportunities to network and make new friends.”

Participants emphasized that the skills they acquired are directly applicable to their everyday work with youth, particularly in advocating for improved conditions in education, employment, and active youth participation in society.

“As youth workers, especially in smaller associations, we often have to take on different roles and tasks due to limited resources and competencies. That’s why I particularly value the opportunity to learn the right methods and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of everything we do in the youth sector. In addition to the lectures, the experiences shared by other participants have been equally valuable lessons for me. I was so happy to see that the whole group shares a passion for youth work and that we all truly care about the training. I’m already looking forward to the next module,” said Narcis Halilović from the “Bosnian Theater” in Tešanj.

The second training module once again highlighted the importance of such programs in building the capacity of professionals working with young people, and fostering a better environment where young people can actively contribute to social change.

The Institute for Youth Development KULT continues its training programs, with the next module offering new knowledge and tools to further improve youth work!
