A 2022 survey on the position and needs of youth, conducted by the Institute for Youth Development KULT, revealed that more than half of young people in BiH would leave the country if given the chance. The reasons vary, but most of them share a common root: the lack of opportunities.
The research showed that many of these young people would choose to stay if they had better prospects—for example, the chance to start their own business.
For young people, opportunity can mean everything. It can be the difference between leaving and staying to build a better future here in BiH. Contrary to the widespread belief that young people are passive or disinterested, the Institute regularly encounters ambitious, motivated individuals who are already contributing to their communities in meaningful ways.
That is why the #JOSUVIJEKSAMTU campaign was launched—to explore the emotions and dilemmas that young people in BiH face, particularly the question of whether to stay or leave. Through honest and authentic conversations, the campaign creates space for dialogue about the challenges confronting youth today.
Participants shared personal stories about why they chose to stay in BiH, as well as the reasons they once considered leaving—ranging from professional ambitions and personal values to the everyday difficulties and systemic obstacles they encounter.
“I feel so many emotions when you ask what this country is to me…,” “Family and home are where I’m happiest,” “Who will fight if we all leave?” “To me, Bosnia is a place of comfort,” “I wish our people had more faith in themselves and knew they could do whatever they want,” and “Still, I hope that love will prevail in the end” are just a few of the reflections shared by inspiring individuals who chose to build their future here and now serve as role models in their communities.
It is crucial to engage with young people, listen to their needs, and raise awareness of the challenges they face—and the ways in which many are already overcoming them.
Personal stories can motivate other young people to confront their own challenges and find ways to overcome them. They’re also valuable to institutions, which can use them to identify ways to help young people and encourage them to stay in the country.
