PRAGG Festival Held in Tuzla: Ideas for a Better Tomorrow!

Tuzla is a city long known for its spirit of dialogue, understanding, and courage to drive everyday change. This year’s PRAGG Festival took place in Tuzla, among people who keep the flame of transformation alive.

The PRAGG Festival, titled “Positive Stories from Bosnia and Herzegovina”, once again proved that culture, creativity, and community can bridge generations and unite diverse ideas. Over two days, around 100 participants from 36 PRAGG communities across Bosnia and Herzegovina gathered to engage in vibrant discussions, explore a rich program, share inspiring stories, and experience a unique blend of solidarity and civic activism. All of this was made possible with the support of the Swiss Government, which, through the PRAGG project, empowers citizens to become agents of positive change in their communities.

Now in its third year, the festival focuses on bringing together different voices from local communities and creating new spaces for fresh ideas.

The festival was officially opened by the Swiss Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, H.E. Gabriele Derighetti, who emphasized the importance of such initiatives for the long-term stability and social progress of the country: “We believe that building a democratic society is as much a process as it is a goal. For the past three decades, Switzerland has been a reliable, long-term partner to the government, civil society, and the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina in strengthening accountable governance, the rule of law, social inclusion, and economic development for all,” said Ambassador Derighetti.

He added:Given the close ties between our two countries, Switzerland will continue to support Bosnia and Herzegovina on its path toward European integration and in building a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future.

Tuzla Mayor Dr. Zijad Lugavić, who attended the opening, highlighted the vital role of local communities in driving positive change and social cohesion: “Tuzla has always been a city of progressive ideas and collective action, and I’m proud that we’re part of this year’s PRAGG Festival and the positive momentum. At a time when negative narratives often dominate the public space, it’s important to highlight trust, community, and the transformative power of collective action. Through the PRAGG project, with the support of Switzerland, we’re showing that local initiatives can change society. When we listen to them and support them, they become beacons of hope and examples of real, grassroots change, said Nikolina Vilov Mahmutović, PRAGG Project Communications Manager.

The festival also showcased initiatives led by PRAGG grant recipients – organizations and individuals strengthening communities across BiH. In a talk-show-style format, participants shared the real changes happening in their communities, exchanged ideas, and inspired one another. Of special importance was the participation of communities newly introduced to the PRAGG process, as the festival gave them a glimpse into what’s possible.

This festival allowed us to showcase our work and learn how creativity can be a powerful tool for social change. Together, we’ve proven that the greatest results come when we listen to each other,” shared Edisa Demić, representative of the association Dignitet and the PRAGG initiative advocating for the proper functioning of the Cantonal Institute for Free Legal Aid.

The third PRAGG Festival may have ended, but the energy and ideas born from the gathering of like-minded people working for a better tomorrow will carry on. This event served as a reminder that activism can be the foundation for building bridges, understanding, and collective action. It leaves a legacy that reinforces the truth: real change is most powerful locally, where people can see and feel it. Together, we shape a better future and push the boundaries of what positive change can achieve.

We sincerely thank all media representatives and local government officials for their strong interest and presence throughout the Festival. The media are an essential part of civil society, and we are pleased to see the growing recognition of the importance of local stories, successes, civic activism, and the values championed through the PRAGG project.
