A meeting with young councilors from the Mostar City Council marked the start of another important initiative by the Institute for Youth Development KULT, working alongside young politicians in municipal and city councils.
The “Youth Councilors” platform brings together young councilors committed to improving opportunities for young people in local communities. The platform aims to analyze the needs and challenges of young people, assess existing programs and measures, and develop targeted initiatives to improve their status in local communities. The Institute will provide professional support to young councilors in this process.
The “Councilors for Youth” platform also seeks to foster cooperation among councilors from different parties and political perspectives, united by a common goal: to develop practical and effective initiatives that improve the position of young people and create new opportunities to enhance their quality of life.
The introductory meeting in Mostar gathered young councilors from various political parties. Representing the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) were Mirza Lalić and Amar Jiho, while Nadina Vujnović attended on behalf of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), and Slavko Zovko represented the Croatian Republican Party (HRS).
In the welcoming setting of the City Hall, the purpose of the “Councilors for Youth” platform was presented, and participants discussed specific areas that would benefit from initiatives. Discussions included internships for students, recognition of non-formal education, support for startups, and tracking the effectiveness of these measures. Key topics also included city security and the need to better inform and educate young people about the importance of health care. One takeaway from the meeting was that the City of Mostar is responsive to the needs of young people and provides various types of support through programs. However, there is a clear need to improve the promotion of these programs through more diverse information channels with better outreach to young people.
A particularly engaging topic at the meeting was the implementation of the Youth Strategy of the City of Mostar. The councilors expressed commitment to executing the Strategy, fulfilling all provisions outlined in Article 14 of the Law on Youth of the FBiH, which prescribes obligations of local units of self-government.
The councilors showed a strong interest in continuing to address the issues and needs of young people by developing proposals to present to the City Council. Through their work so far, these councilors have demonstrated their commitment to improving the status of youth in the city of Mostar.
Once again, we would like to express our gratitude to the councilors for attending the meeting and for offering concrete proposals and ideas that will help further develop the activities of the “Youth Councilor” platform. We also thank the City of Mostar officials for hosting the meeting at the City Hall.
