Workshops held in October as part of the PRAGG program in Doboj, Tuzla, and Breza focused on empowering citizens to play a more active role in local decision-making. The sessions aimed to help participants engage in public processes, make use of consultation mechanisms, and contribute to more transparent and accountable local governance.
The workshops covered essential topics, including the legal framework for citizen participation, public consultation mechanisms, community initiatives, public hearings, communication with local authorities, and real-life examples that can help citizens exercise their rights in their communities. Participants particularly appreciated the mix of theory and hands-on practice.
Workshops can inspire citizens to make a difference
Participants from Doboj noted that these types of workshops are still rare in local communities and should be offered more often. They said the training left them with a clearer understanding of how citizens can influence decisions before they are finalised.
“The workshop helped me see how things really work and how citizens can actually impact decisions before they’re made,” said one participant. She added that programs like this are especially important for anyone who wants to improve their community but doesn’t yet have the knowledge or skills.
Some participants regretted that more people from Doboj couldn’t attend. They felt that practical, locally focused workshops like these could inspire even those who have never been involved in civic life.
One participant shared that in her neighborhood, residents often complain about municipal decisions on social media but rarely utilize formal participation channels, such as public hearings, citizen initiatives, or meetings with municipal assembly members.
Tuzla and Breza citizens are ready to get involved
In Tuzla, participants said the workshops answered many of their questions about local decision-making.
“The workshop gave me clear answers to questions I’ve had for a while, and I really appreciated talking with someone who knows the process,” said one participant. Another added that after the workshop, she would “feel more confident approaching local authorities directly.”
In Breza, citizens highlighted the value of learning about the tools available to them. “After this workshop, I understand which mechanisms we can actually use as members of our community,” said one participant.
The interest and willingness of citizens to get involved show that programs like this are an important step toward building communities where decisions are made openly and with input from the public.
These workshops are part of PRAGG’s broader effort to raise awareness about civic participation, encourage dialogue, and strengthen collaboration between citizens and local authorities. The program continues in other communities.
