CEO of the Institute for Youth Development, KULT Jasmin Bešić, met with Jan de Jong from the Digital Nomad Association in Croatia.
The meeting catalyzed a discussion about their perspectives, past and current projects, and issues faced by youth and the business sector in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Jan’s journey—from leaving his home country of the Netherlands to building a successful career and family life in Croatia—is truly inspiring and motivating. Jan de Jong is the driving force behind the concept of digital nomadism in Croatia and the region. Digital nomadism has a big impact on the economy and tourism of countries that embrace it. The company he currently works for, Webpower Adria, offers fantastic digital marketing strategies.
Croatia was one of the first countries in the European Union to embrace digital nomads, second only to Estonia. Amendments to the Law on Aliens, which came into force on January 1, 2021, introduced the term “digital nomad” and regulated their status. The initiative to introduce digital visas was launched by Jan de Jong.
Jasmin Bešić and Jan de Jong also discussed challenges such as excessive red tape in both countries and the lack of a clear strategic vision from the authorities, particularly regarding ways to encourage young people to stay in the country with their families.
Despite these challenges, they both agreed that Croatia and BiH also offer valuable opportunities to young people.
One of the outcomes of the meeting is a message for youth from the CEO of the Institute for Youth Development KULT: explore what digital nomads have to offer and join the movement to promote digital nomadism in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
