Inherited Political Beliefs: How Our Parents Shape Our Attitudes

Politically literate young people are the foundation of a functional democratic society. Being informed about political processes, institutions, and rights allows young people to actively participate in making decisions and shaping the future we all share. However, research indicates that a significant number of young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina lack sufficient knowledge about the political system and processes that directly impact their lives.

The Institute for Youth Development KULT conducted a survey titled “Political Literacy of Youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” which involved 1,069 young people from across the country. According to the survey, young people frequently form their political attitudes based on the information they receive from their parents, who are often biased in their perspectives. This trend can have long-term consequences for the democratic development of society. Therefore, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of fostering critical thinking among young people and raising their awareness of how they are influenced by the political beliefs of those around them.

To open a dialogue on this important issue, the Institute for Youth Development KULT is organizing a panel discussion titled “Inherited Political Beliefs: How Our Parents Shape Our Attitudes“, which will be held on March 20, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Sarajevo. This panel is organized in collaboration with the Institute for Social Research at the Faculty of Political Sciences.

During the panel discussion, we will gain a broader perspective on this topic with contributions from experts, who will provide insights into the causes and consequences of the lack of critical thinking regarding political beliefs and attitudes.

This discussion brings together expert lecturers from the fields of sociology, political science, and psychology, who will explore how parents’ political beliefs shape the attitudes of young people and emphasize the importance of developing critical thinking in the process of political education. Our panelists are Professor Amer Osmić, Associate Professor Samir Forić, Senka Čimpo, B.Sc. psychologist and psychotherapist and Aziz Đipa from the Institute for Youth Development KULT.

During the discussion, participants will have the chance to examine the causes and consequences of political legacy, engage with experts through questions, and share their own insights and perspectives. The goal of the panel is to inspire young people to think critically, foster political literacy, and create a space for meaningful dialogue on important social issues.

We invite all young people to register to participate in this important debate!

This is a valuable opportunity to engage with experts, share ideas, and contribute to important discussions that impact your political participation.
