Throughout 18 iterations of the “Learn, Think, and Act!” training program, participants have consistently shown just how creatively they can use the opportunities it offers to develop new solutions for youth while actively involving their peers in the process.

By identifying the challenges their peers face and what’s missing in the communities they live in, these hard-working UMiD participants have proven themselves to be true youth leaders. After all, who could know better what young people need than young people themselves? In addition, the chance to implement a local civic initiative is meaningful, motivating, and empowering.

Sevda Muratović from Velika Kladuša, a participant of UMiD18, didn’t wait around for change – she created change herself! During the training, Sevda decided to channel her passion for cycling into a series of activities. Her initiative, “Hop on Your Bike”, became a powerful story about health, community, and inspiration. Young people learned through fun exercise, inspiring others in the community to do the same.

In Teslić, Filip Spasojević refused to let bureaucracy discourage his peers.  Armed with a camera and a clear vision, he created video tutorials that helped many young people navigate administrative processes with ease. His initiative simplified tasks that every young person faces and provided what these young people needed most: the kind of knowledge that builds confidence.

In Banja Luka, Ana Gligorević brought change through her initiative “Odraz” (Reflection), which became a beacon of hope for those who felt hopeless. Through education, workshops, and support, Ana opened doors to new opportunities for youth who often feel unseen and unheard.

Three cities, three different stories, and one powerful message: young people have the power to change the world around them! They just need the chance to become the spark of transformation in their community. The Institute gave Sevda, Filip, and Ana the chance they needed to become that spark.

And if you, too, recognize the problems your peers face—and want to make a difference, gain new experience and knowledge, and form lasting friendships, your time has come. Take the leap and apply for UMiD19.
