The seminar titled “Youth and Social Media: Effective Communication in the Digital Age” offered a great opportunity for the professional development and networking of youth workers and employees of government institutions from various parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Since social media has become the primary source of information for young people today, the seminar focused on how local government units—represented by the participants—can better communicate with youth. Participants also had the chance to explore the role of social media in young people’s lives and suggest concrete solutions for improving both online and offline communication with young people.
“The seminar met my expectations by providing several new ideas on how we can improve our institution’s communication with young people. One of the great advantages was that the participants were not only experienced in working with youth across various fields but also familiar with the systems in their local communities,” said Zoran Jakšić, an employee at the public institution “Youth Center” in Trebinje.
During the seminar, representatives from the Municipality of Centar Sarajevo shared their best practices for working with youth, providing valuable insights for the participants. Nino Stojić, a youth officer from the City Administration of Čapljina, also shared his approach to engaging with young people in the digital age. Nino launched a web portal www.capljina-mladi.info, where he regularly posts important information for youth and youth organizations, improving communication and connections within the community.
“The seminar was incredibly insightful, offering a fresh perspective on how to improve communication with young people. Even though I use social media every day, I hadn’t realized how powerful they are for making local government work more visible to youth and for promoting the opportunities available to them. I’m looking forward to sharing what I learned with my colleagues who handle communication,” said Amra Bojičić, an employee of the Municipality of Ilidža.
In today’s digital world, social networks have become an essential tool for effective communication and information sharing, both for citizens and institutions. Acknowledging this fact, the seminar produced several key recommendations for institutions:
- According to DataReportal, there are over 2 million social media users in BiH. To effectively inform the public, institutions must increase their presence on social media and adapt their content to current trends. This requires a strategic approach that meets citizens’ needs, fosters transparency, encourages interaction and supports democratic engagement.
- In addition to being active on social media, it’s also crucial for institutions to digitalize their processes and services, making access to government services quicker, easier, and more cost-effective for citizens.
The Institute for Youth Development KULT recognizes the challenges faced by youth officers in their daily work and remains dedicated to supporting them as they continue to improve their skills and knowledge.
We look forward to taking further steps together and working on initiatives that will improve the status of youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina!
